Not Sure? Just Ask!

SIG plc, one of our Strategic Partners, explores the initiatives and strategies they’ve developed to improve DE&I and support a collaborative working environment.

In 2024, we identified a need to elevate our Diversity, Equality & Inclusion activities. Previously, we raised awareness and promoted annual events such as Pride, International Women’s Day, and Men’s Health Week. However, there was no consistent thread to tie these activities together and foster a general attitude of acceptance and respect.

To address this, we developed the “Not Sure? Just ASK” initiative to become the foundation of all our DE&I activities, incorporating a simple acronym:

A – Awareness: Consider your environment, those you work with and what’s appropriate to say or do in the workplace.

S – Support: Your HR colleagues and manager are on hand to offer guidance if you are unsure – it’s okay not to know.

K – Knowledge: We have resources available to help you stay up to date and in the know on the UK Resource Centre.

The core of “Not Sure? Just ASK” is promoting the idea that it is okay not to know or completely understand what someone’s background, identity, or sexual orientation implies, as long as they are treated with respect and acceptance.

Building on this, we’re encouraging our colleagues to find out more about minority groups. For example, during Pride 2024, we used “Not Sure, Just ASK” as a foundation, developed more tailored posters and emails incorporating it, and created a quiz focusing on the history and milestones of the Pride movement.

The response has been positive so far, and the goal of creating a foundational initiative for our DE&I activities has been achieved.

The real test comes later in 2024 when we hold our annual engagement survey. One section focuses on DE&I-related metrics, and we’re hoping to see the efforts of our latest initiatives reflected positively this year. Once we have this feedback, we’ll know we are on the right track and can continue to develop and build upon “Not Sure, Just ASK”
