Case Study: Melanie Mummery, 1st Year Engineering Apprentice at Sittingbourne Plant Knauf

Melanie is a Melanie Mummery, First Year Engineering Apprentice, at Sittingbourne Plant Knauf.

On what motivated and attracted her to a role in the Construction / Building Materials Industry, Melanie said: “I was attracted to the role because I grew up with that industry through family members. I felt that this was a path I wanted to adventure and pursue and see how I got on with it all.”

Personal development and gaining new skills are a main driver in Melanie’s role: “What I enjoy most with my role is the ability of gaining new skills and an increase of my personal development. I also enjoy gaining knowledge and having a better understanding of how things work while also socialising and meeting new people.”

Melanie’s advice to other women who might be thinking of joining the Construction / Building Materials Industry as an apprentice is: “It’s an amazing opportunity for females to break into what is labelled as a male industry, and to remind everyone that the industry is starting to change from that stereotype.”

“There are many communities and mentors who do want us women to succeed and applying for an apprenticeship is a fantastic way to learn skills hands-on and gain experience.”

“This industry is always evolving so there is a lot of opportunity for growth and incorporating females into the industry is a massive target that most companies are trying to achieve. You also get to learn and earn at the same time which is always a positive.”
