Knauf UK&I is taking proactive steps to create a safer, more inclusive workplace by addressing sexual harassment head-on. Their strategy combines risk assessment, policy updates, and cultural engagement to meet legal requirements and foster respect across the organisation.
Tailored Risk Assessment
Knauf began by conducting a detailed sexual harassment risk assessment, mapping high-risk scenarios such as manufacturing environments, field-based roles, and events involving third parties. This assessment informed targeted controls and mitigation measures.
Policy Updates and Clear Reporting Channels
Policies were updated to include third-party harassment and examples of online and social media misconduct. Knauf reinforced visibility of its anonymous global Speak Up line and clarified processes for handling complaints, ensuring employees feel supported.
Training and Awareness
Knauf launched a multi-year training programme, starting with in-person dignity-at-work sessions for department heads and annual online refreshers for all staff. New employees receive clear expectations during induction, embedding respect from day one.
Community Engagement
The Women in Knauf (WINK) forum provides a safe space for colleagues to raise concerns and share experiences, complementing formal reporting channels. Knauf also commits to annual reviews of its risk assessment and policy, with additional checks triggered by major changes or incidents.
Sarah Gibson, People Business Partner, Knauf UK&I, explained: “Our approach goes beyond compliance. By assessing risks, updating policies, and creating safe spaces for dialogue, we’re building a culture where everyone feels respected and protected.”
Looking Ahead
Knauf plans to expand training company-wide, improve signage across sites, and strengthen engagement with contractors, customers, training and apprenticeship providers to ensure expectations are clear throughout the supply chain.
Call to Action
Creating a respectful workplace is a shared responsibility. We encourage all organisations to review their policies, assess risks, and provide meaningful training. Together, we can eliminate harassment and build a culture of dignity across the construction industry.
