Emma Hopkins, Category Manager at NMBS

Emma Hopkins is the Category Manager at NMBS.

Before joining NMBS in July 2023, Emma viewed the industry as commercially strong but quite traditional, especially in areas like innovation and diversity. However, with her background in online retail and construction, she recognised the potential to bring in modern, data-led thinking and saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact through supplier strategy and member value.

Emma has experienced some of the common challenges faced by women in male-dominated spaces, especially early on when proving her expertise was often necessary. At NMBS, however, she’s felt empowered and supported. She sees the landscape improving, with more space for women to lead, contribute, and shape the future of the industry.

On the changes she has seen since joining the industry, Emma has noticed a greater focus on data-informed decisions and stronger alignment between suppliers and merchants. The industry is becoming more professional and progressive, with more women involved in key discussions, senior roles, and industry events—an encouraging shift she’s proud to be part of.

When reflecting on what unique skills she brings to her role, Emma’s strength lies in combining analytical thinking with commercial relationship-building. Her experience across different sectors enables her to understand the full supply chain and negotiate effectively. She’s skilled at turning complex data into practical strategies that drive supplier value and member success.

When it comes to addressing gender equity in her role, Emma takes it seriously as a leader. Emma actively supports gender equity by mentoring women and encouraging balanced representation in meetings and projects. She values flexibility and inclusion in the workplace and works with suppliers who share these principles. Through her visibility and leadership, she aims to help redefine what leadership looks like in the sector.
