Calista Muna, Store Controller and Maintenance Planner at Ibstock Brick

My name is Calista Muna, and I am a Store Controller and Maintenance Planner at Ibstock Brick, Chailey.

I am originally from South Africa and moved to the UK in 2017. During my first few years here, I focused on my education, attending school and college while adapting to life in a new country.

Those experiences helped build my confidence, resilience, and determination, ultimately leading me to a rewarding career in the construction and manufacturing industry.

My role involves managing spare parts, coordinating maintenance activities, and ensuring the resources needed to keep production running efficiently are always available. I enjoy working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same, and I take pride in contributing to an industry that helps build homes, schools, and communities.

My journey into engineering and construction was not originally planned, but working closely with maintenance and engineering teams sparked my interest in how equipment, systems, and processes work together. I quickly developed a strong interest in the technical, organisational, and problem-solving aspects of the role, and have since built solid knowledge in maintenance planning, stock control, and operational support.

One of my proudest achievements has been completing the Women+ in Leadership Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship Standard (Level 5) while working full-time. Balancing study, work responsibilities, and personal commitments required discipline, resilience, and strong time management.

The apprenticeship challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, develop my leadership skills, and think more strategically about operational performance and continuous improvement. It strengthened my communication, project management, and decision-making abilities, giving me greater confidence in contributing ideas and supporting positive change within the business.

Another achievement I am particularly proud of was receiving a Ceramic Pledge Award for Health and Safety. Safety is at the heart of our operations, and being recognised for my contribution to promoting safe working practices was a significant moment in my career. The award reflected my commitment to helping create a workplace where people feel supported, valued, and able to work safely.

As a woman working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, I have at times felt the need to prove my knowledge and capabilities. Working within engineering and maintenance environments has encouraged me to develop confidence in my technical understanding, speak up, and trust my expertise.

These experiences have strengthened my resilience and determination. Over time, I have built strong working relationships, gained confidence in my contribution to the team.

My advice to women and young people considering a career in construction, engineering, or manufacturing is to believe in themselves and embrace every learning opportunity. Don’t be discouraged by stereotypes — there are many pathways into the industry, and every skill matters.

I would also like to see more women in engineering, operations, and leadership roles to create a more diverse and inclusive industry for future generations.

My personal motto is: “Focus on what you can control and let everything else take care of itself,” which helps me stay focused and consistent in my work.
