Case Study: Lydia Dulley, Apprentice Project Manager at SIG plc

Lydia Dulley has been an Apprentice Project Manager at SIG plc for one and a half years.

Her role involves cross-team communication on time/resource management, scheduling meetings and resources, monitoring projects, ensuring alignment with organisational goals, and ensuring documentation is up to date.

Even though Lydia wasn’t sure what to expect from her new role in construction, she has now found her place and has picked up a variety of skills: “Prior to joining SIG, I had limited experience in the industry and since joining I have come to realise the dynamic and fast-moving nature of this industry. The opportunities for hands-on learning and career progression, not only in construction but developing skills and knowledge in areas with transferable skills, are a very appealing part of the job for me.”

On being a woman in the industry, Lydia says: “I feel honoured to be able to pave the way for other women considering jobs in male-dominated industries such as construction, being able to show my skills and capabilities and break barriers for others.”

Since joining, she has seen positive changes in the industry: “There have been changes in the industry since I have joined such as increasing awareness surrounding DEI and more training surrounding gender bias and inclusivity. I like to think my gender has had limited to no impact on my role, however, it does push me to work harder to prove my skills to both myself and others.”

To other women who are thinking about applying for an apprenticeship in the construction/building materials industry, Lydia would say: “Go for it! The industry is ever evolving and don’t be afraid to challenge stereotypes – Be confident in you and your abilities!”
