Case Study: Jenny Lin Machining Apprentice At Orbia

Jenny Lin has been a Machining Apprentice with Orbia since September 2023. Jenny works Tuesday to Friday inclusive and attends college 1 day a week at AMRC in Rotherham.

On what attracted Jenny to a role in the Construction/Building materials Industry: Jenny’s always enjoyed Engineering Manufacturing having studied it at school. She considered doing A Levels but felt that having an apprenticeship under her belt would better suit her. She feels the practical experience will be pivotal in helping her secure a Product Design role once she’s completed her apprenticeship.

On the aspects of the role she enjoys the most, Jenny likes the practical side of the role and the people she works with who are helpful and supportive. While she is the only female apprentice in the team,  she enjoys the camaraderie and feels fully supported.

She also likes making a difference and describes her biggest achievement to date as making a gauge for the Product Design team on a manual lathe which enabled them to easily determine whether product dimensions were in scope.

Jenny’s advice to other women who are thinking about applying for an Apprenticeship in the construction/Building Materials Industry is: Do it! It’s great experience and you get to earn while you learn.
