Abi Morgan has been the Apprentice Accounts Receivable Assistant at SIG plc for 1 and a half years.
Her role entails contacting customers regarding overdue invoices/debt, monitoring late payments/payment behaviour, maintaining good customer service, handling account queries and resolving them in a timely manner, using remittances to allocate customer payments to correct invoices, and resolving disputes with branch and customer.
Abi had a certain perception of the construction industry, but this soon changed once entering it: “Prior to joining SIG I felt that the construction industry was very male-dominated, but my team in finance is equal in terms of men and women.”
Her colleagues have been a great support to her throughout her apprenticeship: “One of my favourite things about the role is my colleagues! This job would not be the same without them. They have all shown me endless support on my journey at SIG.”
Not only has she gained great connections, but also new skills: “Another thing I love is the professionalism the job requires. We must provide outstanding customer service, so even when dealing with difficult customers, I can still be polite and patient which shows my skills in self-control.”
To other women who are interested in apprenticeships in the construction industry, Abi would say: “Go for it, there’s nothing a woman can’t do now that a man can. Jobs are less gender orientated now and more about the skills and experience you bring to the table. Don’t let the thought of men dominating the industry scare you off because there is support all around you regardless of gender.”
