Case Study: Amelia Akester, 3rd Year Engineering Apprentice at Immingham Plant Knauf

Amelia Akester is a Third Year Engineering Apprentice at Immingham Plant, Knauf.

Reflecting on what attracted her to the Construction / Building Materials Industry, Amelia says: “It was a role that caught my eye due to it being a different industry to the other industries in the Immingham area.  When looking into what Knauf makes and their process, it sounded interesting and different. Since working here I have enjoyed working in the construction/ building materials industry and look forward to my future within Knauf.”

The diversity of skills and knowledge is what drives Amelia in her role: “What I enjoy most about doing automation and electrical is how it is different to other job roles and it gives me the chance to extend my knowledge onto something other than just electrics.”

What would you say to other females who are thinking about applying for an Apprenticeship in the construction/Building Materials Industry?

Amelia’s advice to other women who are thinking about applying for an Apprenticeship in the construction/Building Materials Industry is: “It is definitely an industry a female can work in so don’t shy away just because it is mainly male-dominated. Everyone is so friendly and happy to help. They are as encouraging for women to join the industry as they are men, especially here at Knauf.”
